Periods shouldn’t be an Embarrassment Anymore

Few days ago, I had gone to a nearby shop to buy sanitary pads and it was when I noticed that shopkeeper was looking for a newspaper to wrap up the packet in it to ensure the thing won’t be visible even before putting it in a poly bag. He took about a couple of minutes for the task and I was already getting restless to leave. So I just told him,  “Uncle bomb nhi hai, esehi dedo” (“It’s not a nuclear bomb, give it as it is”). And then his expression was indescribable as he saw me weirdly without saying anything and handed it to me directly putting it into poly bag. I left.

The above incident hasn’t happened just only at a  particular place but I have noticed such happenings in various places. How pathetic! The thing could appear a jiffy matter to anyone but no doubt, these little things contribute to mindsets of society in a bigger and influential manner. Nothing can be filthy as having such lame mindset about the related topic.

It feels shame how our society still consider period as a taboo, this menstruation thing a sin. After such advancement of education and awareness, people want to be unaware of the fact, it’s just a biological process in woman’s body which is vitally essential for the human evolution in the world. Why don’t they just accept that pads are needed by women same as a medicine is required by a diabetic, though menstruation isn’t any kind of disease, it’s the most natural process carried out in a female’s body. As simple as that. Why to complicate things?

Why are periods always followed by such awkwardness and embarrassment? Well I believe, maybe due to men don’t menstruate. I mean, that’s what we can derive from patriarchal views. We can agree that period blood is unclean from the fact it is impure form of excreted blood. But it doesn’t follow that women are impure at all. And not only men, women are also hesitant about the discussion on the thing. Or they have been taught to act like that since ages. But it’s time to change. I have seen girls/women not able to open or discuss their problems even with their closed ones, friends or family. In fact, there are males who are reluctant to talk about the topic or they don’t consider themselves anyhow related to it as they find it nasty. But this is what we are required to open up to eradicate the taboo, to broaden our views about it and getting awared about the vital process.

Periods is a blessing, not a curse. Menstrual cycles shouldn’t be considered as a pollutant. These are amongst the most normal, most healthy physical functions.

  2. you are right……..this isn’t a taboo……..this shouldn’t be taboo…….though i also feel, that people of both sexes treat this as a taboo because the other sex deal with it that way………either becomes sensitive and then that leads to the other becoming uncomfortable which then further enforces this lack of understanding…….it time we move past it and forward…… πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  3. Reblogged this on Words and Notion and commented:
β€œI am on my Periods, I am bleeding”, how it can be different from breathing or digesting. It’s just another very normal biological phenomenon.

But people are uncomfortable to talk about it; they feel embarrassed even if they talk about it…Another stereotypic impression.

β€œWe are not shy anymore. We are not dealing with any nuclear bombs as Shreya said. We, the girls are likely to bleed for between 2,000 to 3,000-plus days across our lifetimes. So this bloody thing is no more a taboo.”

    1. Yes, Akhila. I am very glad you drew your attention towards this post of mine and found it worth sharing.
And so sad to know, also some females aren’t comfortable about the issue. Firstly they should treat this thing as normal and then whole society should be altered.

  4. Despite increasing awareness about many things this societal norm is still a taboo. And females themselves treat as impure while they mens urate. So in my opinion though we live in patriarchal society, here women themselves don’t want to get rid of all these absurd beliefs.

  6. Very well written Shreya…yes it is a very strange mindset among certain sections of the population for not accepting natural truths just the way it is. I fully agree with you and yet I say with lots of positivity that everyone is not the same……just deal with these stereotypes appropriately and they will learn something I hope….:)

    1. I am glad you appreciated my efforts to raise the issue. Well, we have been dealing with these stereotypes and I see, even change is happening since years at some level, can’t deny. Hope to see a better world.

  7. I couldn’t agree more. Some people are stuck in their ways and they don’t want to change and see things from a different perspective. What they don’t realize is that if they were more open and honest they could see things differently and they would see things for what they are instead of what they “think” they are. I love this post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I totally agree with you.

  10. Yesss even as a boy, I totally agree with you Shreya… Now it’s time that the society starts behaving as an educated one after having some… Embarrassment and shyness has to go away only than can a solution to a problem be brought up… But for that the society has to stop being reluctant on these topics and instead be free minded to support those dealing with it to help them out with their problems if facing any… This was a great step you took for sharing this post as well your thoughts on it too… Much love 😊❀…

  11. Great post…as a boy I have seen this type of event when a girl ask for sanitary napkin under the breath and the shopkeeper vanished inside the shop and came back with a paper wrapped parcel. S’time even the girl speak high, the shopkeeper gives her a stern look at her then to me for looking at the girl–actually am praising the courage of the girl in silent manner…I’m also in search of the perfect or s’thing near to it to know why menstruation i.e. period consider “hush…don’t say it loud…” matter…

    1. Exactly! Being a girl, these incidents have happened with me also which pushed me to write over the topic and provide my views. It’s a little effort to influence minds of people related to the thing. Thank you for reading my post. πŸ™‚

  12. Yes!! The perception of menstruation definitely needs a makeover – of women and men alike. It’s not gross. It’s not something to dislike or hate. It’s not shameful and should no longer be something we have to whisper about or even keep to ourselves. Menstruating is a sign of a healthy body. There are also a number of spiritual connotations too, which I’m actually planning on doing a series about in the future. This was a great post!! Thank you so much for sharing. πŸ™‚
